[Comment] Skeletal considerations in the medical treatment of transgender people

Recognition of the unique challenges and needs of transgender people is growing within the medical community and several guidelines regarding the care of these patients are available.1 Beyond the acute care issues of hormonal and possible surgical interventions needed to achieve alignment with the individual's affirmed gender, there is now a growing recognition that long-term cross-sex hormone therapy might affect the risk of developing a number of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease2 and osteoporosis.
