[Comment] Bariatric surgery and type 2 diabetes: a step closer to defining an optimal approach

Substantial and durable weight loss can lead to remission of type 2 diabetes for some individuals who are overweight or obese, with huge potential health benefits. In The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, Dag Hofsø and colleagues1 report results from the Oseberg study, which take us an important step closer to realising this potential. In a well-designed randomised controlled trial, the investigators show that gastric bypass is associated with a higher remission rate of type 2 diabetes than sleeve gastrectomy at 1 year after surgery.
